Log Cabin Quilt: Playful Feathers, Crosshatching & Beautiful Texture with Natalia Bonner
Join professional machine quilter Natalia Bonner inside the PNQ Academy as she custom machine quilts a beautiful Log Cabin quilt, combining playful feathers, a center medallion and crosshatching with so much yummy texture.
In this instructional video, Natalia shares how she plans, marks and quilts designs that complement the quilt’s traditional piecing. Follow along as she explains her choices and breaks the process into manageable steps you can adapt to your own quilts.
Learn how to use the Sway rulers to mark and quilt curved feather spines, including a demonstration with the Sway 5. Natalia uses the Sway 5 for the feathers along the bottom and the Sway 4 for the feathers across the top. These feathers are loose, playful and full of personality—giving you room to enjoy the process without making every plume identical.
To help those feathers really pop, Natalia fills the surrounding areas with densely quilted straight lines. The contrast between the soft feathers and closely spaced lines creates dimension and an almost faux trapunto look. She also explains how other dense fillers can create a similar effect.
In the center, Natalia combines a medallion with crosshatching and talks through the additional backtracking needed to work around that design. You’ll also see how she aligns the next section of crosshatching after advancing the quilt, creating the appearance of long, continuous lines.
Throughout the video, Natalia shares practical reminders about gentle ruler pressure, using the proper ruler quilting setup and stopping with the needle down before repositioning a ruler.
Grab your Quilter’s Sketchbook, take notes and doodle along. We all start somewhere, and every bit of practice helps build your confidence!

Removing Mark-B-Gone Markings
Always test marking products and the removal method on a scrap of the same fabric before using them on your quilt.
Mix 1 cup filtered water with 1 teaspoon baking soda in a PNQ Misting Spray Bottle. Mist the markings, then allow the quilt to dry completely. Repeat until the markings are completely gone, checking carefully as they can reappear while drying.
Do not apply heat until every trace of the markings is gone.
