Join professional machine quilter Natalia Bonner inside the PNQ Academy as she custom machine quilts a beautiful hand-pieced Pemberley quilt, made by her late client, Raquel.

The Pemberley quilt pattern was designed by Rachel Erickson of Citrus & Mint Designs. With its soft colors, intricate hand piecing and beautiful details, Natalia wanted the quilting to enhance Raquel’s work while honoring the gentle beauty of the quilt.

In this instructional video, Natalia shares her complete quilting process while combining ruler quilting with hand-guided free-motion quilting. You’ll see how naturally she moves between the two techniques and why she keeps her ruler foot attached throughout the entire quilting process.

Because this quilt was hand pieced, Natalia explains that when she refers to “stitching in the ditch,” she is actually stitching just a hair beside the seam. This allows her to secure and define the piecing while working with the natural variations found in handwork.

Natalia also demonstrates her single-stitch basting technique. By manually activating one stitch at a time, she can carefully control the spacing and placement as she secures the quilt layers.

As she works through each block, Natalia breaks the quilting into smaller, more manageable sections. This helps her maintain control, follow her stitching path and keep track of the areas that still need to be quilted.

You’ll also learn why it’s important to plan your quilting path and always leave yourself a way out. Natalia looks for a continuous route through each section to avoid boxing herself in and reduce unnecessary backtracking over previously quilted lines. Visually tracing the path—or sketching it first in the Quilter’s Sketchbook—can make complex quilting designs feel much more approachable.

Removing Disappearing-Ink Markings

Mix 1 cup filtered water with 1 teaspoon baking soda in a Piece N Quilt Misting Bottle.

Always test the solution on a small area first. Mist the markings gently and allow the quilt to dry completely. Repeat if needed, as ink can settle into the batting and reappear while drying.

Do not apply heat until you are completely certain that all markings are gone.
