By The Chimney: Custom Quilting with Rulers & Beautiful Texture with Natalia Bonner
Join professional machine quilter Natalia Bonner inside the PNQ Academy as she custom machine quilts By The Chimney, a beautiful mini quilt designed by Vanessa of Lella Boutique, featuring her Peppermint Cocoa fabric collection for Moda Fabrics.
In this instructional video, Natalia shares how thoughtful planning, ruler quilting and closely spaced lines come together to create so much yummy texture. Follow along as she explains her design choices and breaks the quilting down into manageable steps you can adapt to your own quilts.
Natalia walks you through marking the quilting designs before stitching. With those lines in place, she focuses on finding a continuous path, reducing backtracking and using the ditch to travel between areas. You’ll see how she works within her machine’s available throat space, filling in each section before advancing the quilt.
You’ll also learn how to use the 4-N-1 ruler to create alternating ¼″ and ½″ spacing. Natalia explains how the ruler foot’s offset and the ruler’s markings help guide placement so you can let the ruler do the work.
Some sections are sped up as Natalia works slowly and steadily through the detailed quilting. It takes time, but the texture is so worth it!
Whether you’re getting comfortable with machine quilting rulers or looking for inspiration for your next custom quilt, this video offers practical ideas to build your confidence. Grab your quilter’s sketchbook, doodle along and remember—practice over perfection!

Removing Mark-B-Gone Markings
Before marking your quilt, test the marker and removal method on a scrap of the same fabric.
Mix 1 cup filtered water with 1 teaspoon baking soda in a PNQ Misting Spray Bottle. Mist and blot the markings, then allow the quilt to dry completely. You may need to repeat this several times, as markings can reappear while drying.
Do not apply heat until you are completely certain that every trace of the markings is gone.
